#984 That scene from The Goonies with the pirate ship
Posted by Erin on June 15, 2011
Like many people my age, The Goonies is one of my top five favorite movies. It plays upon every kid’s fantasy – the treasure map, the hunt in the secret passages with all of the challenges along the way, and the ultimate win of the pirate ship.
According to Wikipedia, One Eyed Willie’s ship, the Inferno, was a full sized ship created by production designer J. Michael Riva which was later destroyed because they couldn’t find anyone who wanted it (a travesty!). More detail about it here.
During the filming, no one, not even the actors, were allowed to see the ship. So, that scene when the Goonies emerge into the cave and finally see the ship? That was the first time for everyone, audience and actors. I get a little swept up in the moment just writing about it…it’s just so amazing. But isn’t that how it is everytime you see a tall ship? You are brought back to a time in your childhood where pirate ships could really be hidden in a cave that you discover with all of your friends. And this time, you can sail away on it. Awesome.
