The Victoria festival gets underway

Posted by KTQ on June 28, 2008

Another perfect day in Victoria! With the sun shining, the ships’ masts standing tall in the harbor, and our ASTA flags fluttering in the summer breeze, who couldn’t get excited for today’s events?! We have enjoyed two very busy days down at the education and information tents as thousands of enthusiastic families engage in the Tall Ships festivities.

Yesterday morning, the interns passed out all sorts of ASTA goodies (including fantastic personalized banners) to each of the ships, and we got the opportunity to meet many of the captains and crewmembers of the participating vessels. The sailors, like the ships, came from all over the world to be here for Victoria’s festival. We look forward to getting to know as many of the crewmembers as possible throughout the summer, as they are an intriguing and eclectic bunch! We also got a closer look at the seven vessels which will race in the TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE(r) from Victoria to Port Angeles next week. It should be an exciting race..

Yesterday evening, we spent plenty of time meeting and greeting the military crew aboard USCG Barque Eagle when we accepted a personal invitation by the captain of the vessel himself to a reception soiree. Dressed in our “Friday best,” we chatted with the officers and cadets and enjoyed a front-row view of a perfectly picturesque sunset over Victoria harbor. What a night!
