2009 Internship Opportunity!

Posted by Tall Ships America on February 5, 2009

NOW CLOSED TO APPLICANTS! Thank you to all that applied and we will be making our decision in the next few weeks.

The American Sail Training Association (ASTA) is seeking summer interns who are interested in working in a unique nonprofit environment. Interns support the staff in various components of the TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® Race Series.

Responsibilities include:
• assisting with the tall ship races, merchandise, marketing and annual fundraiser.
• coordinating land-based education programs, such as family hands-on activities, entertainment stage performances, exhibitor/demonstrator presentations, and other duties to be determined.

Interns would join ASTA in Newport on June 8, 2009 and will assist the TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® Coordinator and staff in preparing for the TALL SHIPS® ATLANTIC CHALLENGE 2009 Race Series, The U.S. portion of which starts in June and runs through July. These are high-energy, family-oriented events, bringing majestic tall ships to the waterfronts of Charleston, SC and Boston, MA.

Upon the start of the TALL SHIPS®  ATLANTIC CHALLENGE Series, interns travel with the Race Team to Charleston, SC and then in Boston, MA. The Race Team works with the vessels, crews, trainees, port organizers, US Coast Guard and others to execute a successful series of races and port festivals for traditional sailing ships.  We hope to offer all the interns an opportunity to sail as part of the crew on a tall ship during race leg from Charleston to Boston. There may also be an opportunity to sail in a Cruise in Company from Boston to Halifax, Nova Scotia.  If possible, interns return to Newport, RI to wrap up projects. The internship will end July 24th.

Successful candidates will be organized thinkers, motivated workers, enthusiastic learners, confident communicators and mature young adults. Sailing or sail training experience is helpful but not necessary. Aspiring photographers and writers are welcome.

These unique internships are unpaid; however, ASTA offers the following incentives:
• travel expenses during the event and offers a food allowance when traveling in support of the TALL SHIPS® ATLANTIC CHALLENGE 2009 or other ASTA events.
• Stipend of $1,000 to each intern, payable in two installments.

This summer, the race series begins June 26th in Charleston, SC. Ideally, the interns will meet us in Newport, RI on June 8th. If unable to travel to Newport in time, interns would meet the rest of the team in Charleston on June 23rd.

NOTE:  Interns are responsible for finding their own way to meet the Race Team, as well as housing in Newport. In the past, we have helped interns find local housing.

If you are interested, you can apply via email to mailto:erin@sailtraining.org.   Please include a cover letter, resume and references. Additionally, please submit a brief writing sample, which focuses on what value you would bring to the American Sail Training Association and what you would like to gain from the experience.

Applications must be received by April 15, 2009

  1. I know that housing isn’t provided, but will there at least be some assistance in where to find housing?
