ASTA Internship Opportunity for Summer 2010

Posted by Tall Ships America on February 16, 2010

The American Sail Training Association (ASTA) is seeking summer interns who are interested in working in a unique nonprofit environment. Interns support the staff in various components of the TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® Race Series.

Responsibilities include:
• assisting with merchandise/information booth, marketing surveys, maintaining online social networks (blogging, videos, photos), liaison between ASTA, ports and ships.
• coordinating land-based environmental education programs, such as hands-on activities, entertainment stage performances, exhibitor/demonstrator presentations, and other duties to be determined.

Interns will join ASTA in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on June 28, 2010 and will assist the TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® Coordinator and staff in preparing for the Great Lakes United TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® 2010 Race Series, which starts the end of June and runs through the end of August. These are high-energy, family-oriented events, bringing majestic tall ships to the waterfronts of Toronto, ON; Cleveland, OH; Bay City, MI; Duluth, MN; Green Bay, WI, and Chicago, IL.

Interns travel with the Race Team to all six ports. The Race Team works with the vessels, crews, trainees, port organizers, US Coast Guard and others to execute a successful series of races and port festivals for traditional sailing ships.  We hope to offer all the interns an opportunity to sail as part of the crew on a tall ship during at least on of the four race legs throughout the summer.  The internship will end August 30th in Chicago.

Successful candidates will be organized thinkers, motivated workers, enthusiastic learners, confident communicators and mature young adults. Sailing or sail training experience is helpful but not necessary. Aspiring photographers and writers are welcome.

ASTA offers the following incentives:
• travel expenses during the event and offers a food allowance when traveling in support of the Great Lakes United TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® 2010 or other ASTA events.
• Stipend of $1,000 to each intern, paid in two installments.

This summer, the race series begins June 30th in Toronto, Ontario. Interns will meet us in Toronto on Monday, June 28th. The internship will end August 30th in Chicago.

NOTE:  Interns are responsible for finding their own way to meet the Race Team in Toronto and home from Chicago at the end of the program.

If you are interested, you can apply via email to mailto:erin@sailtraining.org.   Please include a cover letter, resume and references. Additionally, please submit a brief writing sample which focuses on what value you would bring to the American Sail Training Association and what you would like to gain from the experience.

Applications must be received by April 15, 2010.  Incomplete applications will not be considered.
