On top of the world in Duluth, Minnesota

Posted by Tall Ships America on July 30, 2010

The fleet arrives

You couldn’t have asked for a more perfect summer day- crisp blue skies, light wind and tall ships on the horizon. Since Patti was the Parade Marshall for the Parade of Sail into Duluth Harbor,  the three of us were lucky enough to be on the arial lift bridge for the afternoon with arguably one of the best views in town.  People began settling in for the parade early in the morning, bringing beach chairs, coolers and snacks.

By the afternoon, thousands of people lined the causeway into Duluth and gave the ships a true Minnesota welcome.

The festivities carried over to the stage where the Mayor of Duluth, Don Ness, addressed the crowd, along with representatives from the port, city and the American Sail Training Association.  Brian and I got to see Becca, Libby and Samara and were able to catch up with them and all of thier adventures. The team is back!

Last night, the University of Minnesota, Duluth staged Gilbert and Sullivan’s Pirates of Penzance and the lawn was packed. It was a great show, one of my personal favorites. They’ll be performing the satirical opera all week so be sure to stop by and catch a show. Tonight is the Party in Paradise with a Jimmy Buffet tribute band and we all have our fingers crossed that the thunderstorms stay away.

  1. I have started a special group/pool/site on FLICKR for photos of the Tall Ships in all the Challenge 2010 cities.

The group/pool can be found as TALL SHIPS Great Lakes (Duluth and all Cities) 2010.

Check it out. There are some fantastic photos posted. Encourage others to join the site. Sally Strand MPLS. MN
