Activity is picking up here at the ASTA HQ. January and February we gather our strength for a busy spring of receptions, travel, regional meetings and a board retreat. Last week was the kick-off event as Lori, Bert, Patti and I headed down to Washington, DC to organize a reception hosted by Senator John Kerry in the Lyndon B. Johnson Room of the U. S. Capitol Building to anounce the TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® Series on the Atlantic Coast in 2012 and the Great Lakes in 2013. On the list of invitees were Naval Attachés, representatives from the Coast Guard, Port Partners from 2010, 2012 and 2013, ASTA Boardmembers, and the Rhode Island political delegation.
This is our third reception in the LBJ Room and there were many familiar faces. Throughout the course of the evening we had speeches from Senator Jack Reed, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, and CAPT Eric Jones of the USCG Barque Eagle, with a brief visit from Congressman David Cicilline (the former Mayor of Providence. Woot!). I was able to chat briefly with the Naval Attachés from Oman and Italy, both of whom have gorgeous vessels (Amerigo Vespucci and Shabab of Oman, respectively) which would be exciting additions to our summer fleet. Photos from the event are up on our Flickr site, http://www.flickr.com/photos/tallshipschallenge/. We had a wonderful turnout and it was nice to see the support for the TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE®.
Also, I’ll be sailing with the big kids for the next ten days. Some people take vacations at the beach, I prefer to sail on the Eagle in March. Fingers crossed for better weather than what we had on the Bounty . Back in two weeks- saltier, with calloused hands and hopefully photos from the royal yard (the rig is about 50 feet higher than Bounty -eep!). Fair Winds!
