Newport Birthday Celebration

Posted by Tall Ships America on June 25, 2011

Over 350 people celebrated the 90th birthday of Harry H. Anderson at the New York Yacht Club last Saturday in Newport, RI. The event honored his unwavering commitment to sailing and sail training, while at the same time allowing friends and family to shower Harry with well deserved accolades. It was truly a special night.

The New York Yacht Club overlooks Newport Harbor and we had a perfectly beautiful summer night for a party. Cocktails were served on the lawn while guests were able to peruse the silent auction tables.  During dinner, Harry shared some personal stories of sailing, a bust of his likeness was revealed, and Gary Jobson showed a special video of Harry’s life..  Later in the evening, Mr. Jobson was the Master of Ceremonies for the live auction items.  Finally, the night was capped off with music from the Alex Donner Orchestra.

It was a festive night which both celebrated a remarkable individual and sailor, and raised awareness for the American Sail Training Association (of which Harry is an original founder).  Fair Winds Harry and a very Happy Birthday!
