One Journey Ends, Another Begins
Posted by Tall Ships America on June 10, 2015
Last Friday, L’Hermione arrived in Yorktown, Virginia, to a wildly enthusiastic crowd. I think I heard more French spoken than English and everyone (but me) remembered to bring their French flags. Even though it was a grey and overcast day, L’Hermione made a grand entrance with her cannons blazing and crew singing from the rigging. Local Tall Ships America members, Serenity, Alliance and Godspeed, were there to escort her to the dock. After two years of planning, it was all, finally, happening.
Bert and I had the opportunity to see the ship when she made a preliminary stop in Norfolk to get ready for her grand arrival into Yorktown. Stores were replenished, Coast Guard inspections completed, Customs and Border Protection made sure everything was in order, fresh water pumped in and the dirty water pumped out. Crew members were busily cleaning and making sure everything was ship shape on deck. All to make sure L’Hermione looked her best for her fans.
And, just to remind us that it is, indeed a small world (especially if you work on tall ships) Bert ran into a shipmate he hadn’t seen in 25 years.
L’Hermione is on her way to Mount Vernon and Alexandria this week and you can find her itinerary for the rest of the summer at Voyage 2015. Eliza and I are heading to Cape Charles, VA tomorrow for the first stop in the TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® Race Series. We could not be more excited to see Picton Castle, Hindu, Tree of Life, Serenity and Lynx at Tall Ships(R) At Cape Charles this weekend.
Eliza and I will be posting from the road so be sure to sign up for the blog to get updates. We also will be tweeting (follow us @tallshipsfleet) and, last but not least, go ahead and join the TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® group on Facebook. Let the summer begin!
