Job Description

The TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® Coordinator is part of the TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® Race Team. The ideal candidate will be happy in a fast-paced, demanding, team oriented environment, and also comfortable taking initiative and working independently. The ability to multitask and handle diverse projects and deadlines is a must. Superior communication skills are essential. We are willing to train promising candidates.

The job is based in Newport, Rhode Island but also requires extensive travelling as part of port recruitment and during the TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® Race Series.

Primary Responsibilities


– Coordination on behalf of participating vessels and Host Ports with the United States Coast Guard, Customs and Border Protection, other government agencies, for permits, visas, safety and security forms as they relate to the Marine Event of National Significance designation.

– Assist TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE Director in the recruitment and cultivation of potential ships to participate in the series.

– Create and maintain press and media kits.

Prior to and During a TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® event

– Recruit, hire and manage summer internship program.

– Assist in race coordination – create, implement, and run off shore races for tall ships. Includes recruiting and education of local volunteers for the race start and communication of sailing instructions to the ship captains.

– Coordinate between host port organizers, visiting vessels, media and event stakeholders. Assist in management of execution in all event functions.

Social Media Your goal is to help increase views, shares, and build our growing community.

– Manage social media presence for Tall Ships America/ TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® Series (including host ports and participating vessels) throughout social media network.

– Run social media efforts for live events, including TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® series, annual conference, and fundraisers

– Writing, scheduling and real time maintenance/monitoring of our various channels

– Plan and schedule social coverage of upcoming events in advance.


Secondary Responsibilities

– Print content: Design, build and publish monthly newsletters, publications, brochures, and program guides adhering to professional style, content, and format. Create new and formal reports as required.

– Annual conference on Sail Training and Tall Ships: Create, implement, manage sessions and speakers. Assist with registration, set up and break down of event


Terms and Conditions

This is a full time position. Salary commensurate with experience. Requirement to travel and work long hours when on the road with the race team.
