Where you’ll find her

Fun Facts

Designed and built in 1982 by the late Captain Thomas G. Fuller, who was one of  Canada’s most decorated WWII naval war heroes, earning the name “Pirate of the Adriatic”.

The Backstory
Originally sailed as a private yacht, Fair Jeanne is now in service as a sail training vessel for Bytown Brigantine, a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering leadership, confidence, and self reliance in youth through the adventure of square-rig sailing.  During the summer months, she provides voyages for youth 13-19 years old and is also a floating high school.

The Quick Backstory
Launched in 1967, she spent twenty years fishing for cod in the North Atlantic. Abandoned at a Halifax pier, she was bought and converted into a 19th century Grand Banks schooner.

#TALLSHIPSTUESDAY is back, y’all! After a brief hiatus, we return just in time for the TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® Great Lakes Race Series. These next few months will feature our fleet of vessels that you can see, hear, and touch when they come to your host city this summer. Let’s do this!

EMPIRE SANDY

Where you’ll find the ship
Toronto, Ontario, Canada

This summer she will be at Tall Ships® Brockville

Fun Facts
The Empire Sandy was laid down in the shipyard of Clelands (Successors), Willington Quay-on-Tyne England on Dec 22, 1942. She was built as an Englishman/Larch class Deep Sea Tug with the added provision for mounting two Hotchkiss Anti-Aircraft guns. She was completed and went into service on July 14, 1943. Her first voyage commenced July30th sailing in convoy to Iceland. Voyages were usually done in convoys for protection against the German U-Boats. The Empire Sandy sailed in a total of sixteen convoys to her destinations.

She served in the North Atlantic from Iceland to Sierra Leone, the Mediterranean Sea, Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean.

The backstory (tell me more!)
The 200-foot topsail schooner the Empire Sandy is Canada’s largest schooner. Built in 1943, she sails with 11,000 square free of canvas and has double cannons that are fired at special times. Sails are hoisted as the tall ship departs and the wind is harnessed to propel the 740 ton vessel along Toronto’s scenic waterfront. Wide expansive decks and wood paneled dining areas set the tone for a comfortable, exhilarating experience. Empire Sandy has hosted a variety of small and large groups including weddings, corporate events, dinner dance events canal tours and more. Moored at the foot of Spadina Avenue at Queens Quay’s is also certified for out of town trips.

Fun Facts
 The name “brigantines” comes from the Italian word brigantino meaning a pirate ship and was associated with the vessels favoured by them in the Mediterranean.

Their backstories
The two brigantines are specifically designed as sail training ships. Both ships sail the Great Lakes throughout the summer with a full youth crew aged 13-18, the exception being an adult captain. Each year, each ship sails over 4,000 miles, spends over 40 nights at sea, and introduces 300 trainees to the tall ship experience.

Youth programs, school groups from middle school through college, and interested adult groups.

Fun Facts
She was originally built for Gen. George S. Patton to sail around the world “When the war is over, and if I live through it…”

The backstory

The Alden schooner was built in 1939 in Maine and remained in the Patton family until the 1970s when she was sold to a Landmark school in Massachusetts. In 1994, she was relaunched and remained in private hands for the next 20 years, racing in various classic yacht regattas. In 2012 she was extensively restored and now is open to the public.

Fun Facts
Denis Sullivan is the only replica of a three masted Great Lakes schooner in the world. Right now, they have a crowd sourcing campaign underway. Click here to help them meet their goals and learn more about their programs.

The backstory

The ship is a goodwill ambassador for the State of Wisconsin and is owned and operated by Discovery World in Milwaukee. From her homeport, the schooner offers educational day sails and private charters for people of all ages from May through September. The programming is committed to re-establishing the historical, cultural and environmental bonds between the community and one of it’s most valuable resources, the Great Lakes.

Fun Facts
Windy is the first certified four-masted traditional sailing vessel built in the U.S.A. since 1921.

Her Backstory
Windy was built by Detyens Shipyard, Inc. of Charleston SC. A custom design, she was conceived by Captain Robert Marthai, longtime sailor and traveler, also became a maritime adventurer, maritime historian, designer and shipbuilder. From the beginning, her mission was intended to bring Tall Ship sailing to the public, for enjoyment, personal and spiritual growth, and self-discovery. In the years since coming to Navy Pier, Windy saw many thousands of students, Girl Scout, Boy Scouts, youth groups, families and other guests across her decks for educational cruises, daysailing, festivals, religious, corporate, and private celebrations. Since 2008, Tall Ship Windy is now the pride and joy of husband-and-wife owner/management team Captain Bruce Randall and Karen Randall. Windy provides an opportunity for people from all walks of life to experience an authentic tall ship and crew while sailing in a safe and protected waterway.

Fun Facts

Between 1985 and 1990, 165 Maritime Heritage Alliance volunteers gave 40,000 hours to build the schooner Madeline, a 56-ft. twin-masted replica of an 1840’s commercial vessel.

Her backstory

The Maritime Heritage Alliance’s schooner Madeline is a reconstruction of a mid-19th century Great Lakes schooner and one of the State of Michigan’s official tall ships. She was built between 1985 and 1990 in Traverse City, Michigan by volunteer members of the non-profit group, the Maritime Heritage Alliance.

Her mission is to serve as a floating center for the interpretation of Great Lakes maritime history. She is open to visitors in her home port of Traverse City and travels to other Great Lakes ports under local sponsorship. Madeline’s financial support comes entirely from people who are interested in preserving Great Lakes history.

Chicago, IL. This summer she will be participating at Pepsi® Tall Ships® Chicago 2016

Fun Facts
Named after the epic sea story, Wake of the Red Witch, by Garland Roark. The salon features posters from the 1949 film based on the story, starring John Wayne and Gail Russell.

The backstory
Schooners like Red Witch could be seen a hundred years ago sailing in the Great Lakes. Red Witch is based on a design by the famous naval architect, John Alden and was built specifically for charter passenger travel. Red Witch has enjoyed a long pedigree of charter sailing, beginning in Hawaii and San Diego before moving to the Great Lakes. She has also been a registered Exhibition Tall Ship, and was awarded flagship status at the State of Ohio’s Bicentennial celebration in 2003.

Fun Fact

This spring, BaySail launched a new program called SEA SCHOLAR. Four high school students set sail for a 30 day voyage aboard Appledore V from Key West, FL to Bay City, MI. It’s been an amazing voyage! You can read about the experience so far and follow along through Bay Sail’s website.
