What’s in a name?

Posted by Tall Ships America on August 5, 2008

Naming a ship is a deeply personal process. Owners agonize for months trying to pick out the perfect name, a process not unlike naming a child. Since renaming a boat is considered extremely unlucky (and one does not want to press their luck at sea), a name change ceremony is not something to be undertaken lightly. Many of the tall ships in our fleet this summer are historic replica’s and therefore have had the same name for centuries (for example the NINA, of Columbus fame). But how did they get their names? Jesse, Jo and Karen went to several captain’s and asked them “What’s in a name?”

The first video is of Captain Kellick of the Privateer LYNX out of California.
